Description of the work
With "The Dark Side of the Moon," Jen Weissenbacher creates a hybrid object between painting and sculptural relief. The central form – a massive, almost planetary body – emerges from the background and asserts itself as a sculptural presence in space. Its surface, reminiscent of volcanic lunar landscapes, is made tangible through the use of polymer clay.
The pictorial space behind is filled with dynamic waves of color: a whirl of light and atmosphere reminiscent of satellite images yet remaining painterly and abstract. In this constellation, the foreground body enters into a pictorial dialogue with the background – between static and movement, presence and aura.
The “dark side of the moon” is understood here not only physically, but also metaphorically – as a cipher for the unknowable, the unconscious, which always remains eluded by the observer.
The work addresses visibility as a construction: what we see is always only a part of the whole – what is truly significant lies beyond the surface.
