Description of the work
In Gloria, Jen Weissenbacher reinterprets the photographic portrait of a young chimpanzee in the care of the organization Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection – not as an image, but as a shining symbol of vulnerability, dignity and connection.
The central figure appears in a calm frontal position, with a raised hand gently touching the head – a gesture that appears simultaneously thoughtful, self-reflective, and touching. The gaze is alert, open, almost penetrating—and at the same time sustained by an unfiltered emotionality that radiates back into the viewer.
The golden background, painted in relief, lends the scene an iconic aura. Weissenbacher presents the animal not as an exotic creature or object, but as an equal counterpart – a bearer of expression, history, and light.
The luminous, deliberately artificial colors – ranging from turquoise to violet to flaming orange – create a visual energy that elevates the image far beyond the documentary level. Color becomes the language of empathy, the emotional coding of an encounter between beings.
Gloria is a homage – to a rescued individual, but also to the possibility of a different relationship between humans and animals. It is a picture of closeness in respect, of light in the gaze, of hope in the face of the other.
