Description of the work
In "Sunset Dripped Like Honey," Jen Weissenbacher combines contrasting color worlds with a symbolically charged imagery that oscillates between dreams and pop culture. At its center is a raven—a mythical creature, messenger, and guardian, often interpreted as a liminal figure between life and death. Here, however, it appears in an unusual palette: its plumage glows in intense shades of violet, magenta, and cobalt.
In the background, a flaming, orange-red circle of sunlight cuts through the composition—its surface appears to melt, flowing downward in dripping streams. This "running down sun" becomes a poetic metaphor for time, decay, perhaps even for an excess of light that, in its intensity, becomes destructive. The title echoes this image: Sunset dripping like honey—sweet, heavy, slow.
The visual language draws on Pop aesthetic techniques: bold colors, clear contours, and a symbolically exaggerated composition. At the same time, the surface is pierced with textured paste—a feature that gives the canvas body and binds the light in depth.
“Sunset dripped like Honey” is a work about perception and transformation: about the animal as a carrier of meaning, about light as an ambivalent force, about beauty in the twilight.
